This is an adventure novel by Alexander Dumas (1844). It is set in France, Italy and the Mediterranean and is concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy and forgiveness. It centres on a man Edmond Dantes who is wrongly imprisoned in the notorious Chateau d’If. While he is there the Abbe Faria tells him of hidden treasure on an Italian island. On his escape he finds the treasure, buys the island and the title of Count and goes about exacting revenge on his persecutors.
