‘The Thirty-Nine Steps’ is an adventure novel by John Buchan (1915) and is both a personal and political drama. Richard Hannay begins a new life in London where a freelance spy, Scudder, tells him of a plot to assassinate the Greek Premier, Karolides. On Scudder’s murder, he is hunted by the police. In his possession is Scudder’s ciphered notebook which refers to the thirty-nine steps, a landing point in England for potential German invasion. Many films were made of the book, all placing the steps in different geographical locations. One version has Hannay hanging from the hands of Big Ben in an effort to stop the clock.
