Statement
A natural progression from working with paperclay to paper itself, has allowed me to create a new body of work indulging my lifelong love of books as objects. Books, as everyday commodities designed to hold information, are, unless of historical importance, more often than not discarded as cultural detritus. Some book artists concentrate on the abstract quality of a book’s shape. Its original text may become irrelevant to the final sculptural form. However, it may also be thought of as a rich store of symbolic images; a vehicle for the construction of narratives from both personal and cultural mythologies. In ‘defacing’ the book it allows the viewer to ‘read’ it in an entirely new way.
